Steal

Also known as: pickpocket, pickpocketing, rob, stealing, theft

Steal is a stealth skill that governs your ability to lift and place things furtively, including from and into the inventories of another player.

By typing STEAL <keyword>, you will attempt to pick up something in the room without anyone detecting you having done so. STEAL <keyword> FROM <container/person> will likewise attempt to lift an item from a container or out of someone's inventory respectively. How likely people are to notice you stealing is a function of the mass you are attempting to steal and their own search skill. Stealing from player purses is governed by rules -- you are only able to steal a proportion of any total coins in their purse at any time.

Note that, mechanically, every use of steal is not necessarily the crime of theft. For example, one could use steal to quietly gather a knife off of the ground to defend themselves while held at swordpoint. Similarly, the actual crime of theft does not require the command -- breaking down a door in a storefront and simply using GET to take coins from the till is still theft even if you did not type steal. Theft is an in-character definition; steal is a command.

Steal trains when opposed by a sufficiently perceptive person observing in the room; their search opposes your steal and trains it.

Steal is governed by agility (primary) and intelligence (secondary).
