Climb

Also known as: climbing, fall, falling, jump, rappel, rappelling

Climb is a traversal skill that governs your ability to scale surfaces too sheer to be walked upon. You automatically begin climbing when you enter such terrain. Climbing in Rhizome takes stamina. Failing a climb check will not necessarily instantly result in a fall. Rather, depending on how badly you flubbed the attempt, you will lose a portion of your remaining stamina. When your stamina reaches zero, you will then slip and fall from your climb. Damage from falls scales with how many rooms you must fall before you slam into the earth.

In this way, if you are struggling halfway up a cliff face and realize you likely will not mount the climb before running out of stamina, you can blunt the eventual damage by descending instead. Damage from a fall also scales off of the substrate at the bottom, with water hurting far less than solid substrate. However, falling from a cliff and into water too deep to stand means you are now trying to swim with no stamina. This is called drowning and you shouldn't do it. If you would rather just give up on a climb and force a fall without expending all of your stamina, you can JUMP mid climb. You can also jump <direction> to immediately jump over the edge of a cliff in that direction with no climb check, immediately falling. Party members will not automatically follow the leader into a jump.

Climb trains based on how high off the ground you are climbing. Riskier climbs train the skill higher, but have greater risk, obviously.

Climb is governed by agility (primary) and endurance (secondary).
