Construction
Also known as: building, buildings, construct, structures
Construction is a skill and a process of building player owned houses. This is the page pertaining to the skill and the process of actually crafting a building. To learn more about the actual process of player owned property, please refer to that helpfile.
Construction allows players to build foundations, walls, and ceilings, as well as doors and windows. In order to construct a room, you must have a foundation and four walls in your inventory or in the room with you. These things are clearly very heavy, so most construction workers will haul components to the work site and build in situ, but you can do whatever works for you. Foundations are typically stone, but walls, ceilings, and doors can be made of different materials which do affect quality.
Once you have those five things, and you are standing in an applicable room, you can simply type construct room <direction>, and a room will be produced. Note that stone walls are sturdier than wooden walls, but require more material and are more expensive to maintain both in taxes and in repairs.
Once you have initially constructed the room, you will see that there is no door; visualize if you will a building with an open archway. You may construct a door and place it by construct door <direction> which will place a door in that direction that may be opened and closed. Once inside the room, you may attach a ceiling. Until a ceiling is attached, the room is considered to be outdoors for the purpose of gardens, farming, weather, and so forth.
Walking into the room will display a placeholder description and name. The construction worker, the deed holder for the civil plot, or the person who founded the homestead (see player housing file) all can describe and name a constructed room, but it cannot be changed once set, so be certain before you finalize your submission.
Player construction is extensible, and simply walking into the room you have previously made and repeating this process will permit you to expand upon the structure. Keep in mind that larger structures are more costly to staff, repair, pay for, and potentially defend if someone gets ideas in their heads.
Like all crafts, buildings have quality derived from the quality of the wood and stone used to make their components (foundations, walls, etc). The overall quality of the building is the average of the quality of all of its rooms, and each room retains its individual quality. See the player housing file to see the process by which buildings are destroyed by force.
The governing stats of construction are strength (primary) and endurance (secondary).
