PUT and GIVE

Put and give are contextual aliases -- the same command, just used in different situations.

Command What it does
put <item> in <container> Puts a loose item into a container
give <item> to <someone> Hands an item to a player or NPC in the room
put 20 farthings in <container>, give coins to <someone> The same, with coins (coins or all money means your whole purse)

Give is simply putting something in someone else's inventory. You can place items into containers you're holding, wearing, or ones that are in the room with you. You must unequip items with remove before you can give or put them away to prevent mishaps like handing the legendary sword on your belt to the novice recruit.

You cannot put things in a container that is closed, that is designed to hold liquids (use fill or pour), or if the container does not have sufficient space to hold the item.

You cannot give things to characters who have no space in their inventory for it, or who are currently rejecting offered objects.

ACCEPT OFF/ON will toggle if you are blindly accepting items; if accept is on, you will automatically accept items given to you, and if it is off, you will reject them with a message shown to you and the giver. You can, however, give something to someone with accept off if they cannot see you -- consider it a reverse pickpocketing.
