Dwarf

Also known as: dwarves

Dwarves are short, stocky humanoids armed with powerful strength and an intense curiosity. Dwarves are renown as tinkerers, inventors, and free-thinkers. Their strong builds and vigor make them stalwart fighters. The second most populous race from Burros, dwarves have integrated readily with human society. Though both majority human and majority dwarf cities and nations exist on Burros, both generally have sizeable populations of the minor race present and living relatively closely.

Dwarves stand from 3'7" to 4'3" and their powerful, dense builds typically tip scales from 140-200 pounds. Their skin colors are typically more variable than humans, ranging from ivory to black, and including shades of green and orange. Their eye colors are within the normal human range of colors. Note: while capable of growing beards, dwarves are not any more likely to have them than your average human, and the women are not typically any more bearded than human women.

Dwarves are most famous for their intense fixation on understanding complex properties. This manifests in a number of ways. They love to design and build all manner of things, from wind and watermills to counter-weighted lift systems. Dwarven cities generally have cutting-edge technologies and innovations within their walls. Dwarven trebuchets and other military inventions are highly effective and widely sought after by all military commanders and most standing armies on Burros have at least one regiment of dwarven regulars or mercenaries due to their fighting capacity.

However, this intelligence has a caveat. Dwarves are notorious for failing to consider bigger-picture issues. They are overly fixated on what is possible, versus what is practical, and even on occasion what is truly ethical. Military commanders, civil planners, and foremen need to watch their dwarven colleagues very closely, lest they turn their back and some unplanned innovation occurs to the disaster of all. This is one reason dwarves and humans are bedfellows -- human input into dwarven efforts usually provides some practical grounding that prevents their excitement from spiraling heinously out of control. Dwarves are also something of pranksters.

Historically, dwarves were relatively slow to adopt Delarism, finding the concept of religion too conservative and static for their liking. Despite this, many dwarves, due to their ready integration into human society, have converted. Those that don't tend to worship one of the pantheon of Dwarven gods, though most in Delarian dominated societies do so very privately for fear of alienating their neighbors. Church officials watch dwarves in their flock with a sort of wary fondness, as the dwarven penchant for fiddling tends to get them into trouble more often than not.

Dwarves and Riss tend to have cool relationships, the latter finding the impulsive nature of the former a liability, and their fascination with technological progress and liberalism confusing. While humans tend to bridge over Riss and Dwarven interactions, without a human mediator of some sort, Dwarves and Riss typically fall to arguing and race-baiting. There have been several prominent Riss-Dwarf wars on Burros as a result.

Due to their incredibly small stature, dwarves are significantly slower on their feet than other races.
